Starbucks announced plans on opening 2 new stores each day in North America between 2013 and 2017. According to Wiki Answers, there are over 16,600 stores worldwide as of December 2012. Around 90 percent of people fall into this category. For some reason, about 10 percent of people have what is known as an internal passion for having their own small business.

Entrepreneurs start small businesses every day. Starbucks was a small business at one point. The entrepreneur envisioned a Starbucks Coffee Shop On Every Corner when he started his business.

I decided in 2001 that I no longer needed to drink coffee and moved to drinking one decaf green tea each morning. The green tea has health benefits so I moved to a healthier alternative. When you decide that you have had enough caffeine, it is best to wean yourself off the caffeine to avoid some serious withdrawal symptoms.

If you make a pot of coffee at home, instead of putting in a full scoop from the coffee can, only add 7/8 of a scoop. Stay at that level for a couple of days. Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

Food We Eat and Disease

Welcome to my post titled the Food We Eat and Disease. I share my experience about how I was able to move from a very poor diet to a very healthy diet.

My family of origin has for most of their lives resided in the Southeastern part of the United States. Many people including myself believed that you have to eat meat at every meal. Our mother would fix fried chicken one night, pot roast the next night, fish the next night and meatloaf or liver the next night. We had bacon and sausage with eggs for breakfast on many mornings. Our lunch box had ham sandwiches, turkey sandwiches, tuna fish sandwiches and sometimes a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Food We Eat and DiseaseWe did eat vegetables with our supper. The amount of vegetables we ate with our supper was much less than I personally eat now. I became a vegetarian in 2001 when I decided that living with an extra 70 pounds was not conducive to my long term health. Just by cutting out red meat, white sugar and white flour, I was able to shed the extra weight in just a few months.

I have not struggled with weight since I made that decision in 2001. I have since learned that animal products have absolutely NO fiber. Our body needs fiber everyday to clean the digestive tract which is a very large organ winding through your body. Animal products have cholesterol and fat.

Myths About Meat

I grew up thinking and believing that I had to eat meat in order to get protein and be strong. Did you know that there is more than enough protein for our daily needs in a handful of pumpkin, sesame or sunflower seeds? Many vegetables also have protein. Carl Lewis who won several gold medals in the Olympic Games is a vegetarian. He knew that building lean muscle mass through a vegetarian diet would help him reach his peak physical ability.

Food We Eat and DiseaseThere is an epidemic of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and obesity in North America today. Did you know that eating animal products drastically raises the likelihood that you will be impacted by those three conditions?

Many people are not worried about the Food We Eat and Disease because they would rather take a prescription drug that will deal with the symptoms associated with the lifestyle diseases that result from a poor diet that lacks nutrition.

As I wrote earlier, meat has NO fiber but it adds fat and cholesterol into your body. I have seen the results of people reversing cancer, diabetes, heart disease and obesity by eliminating meat from their diet. By eating a plant based diet of beans, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds, vegetables, and whole grains, people can lower their risk of dying from a lifestyle disease.

Everyone that has lived since 1985 has read about E-Coli and Mad Cow Disease. If you watch a video of the way chickens are contained in cages and injected with growth hormones, you may decide for yourself there is a better way. I have never desired a piece of chicken since seeing a video that showed the animal not being able to move around in a cage. The bird was caged up with feces and the odor of the chicken house was noxious. Chicken houses only desire the birds to get as big as possible in a short amount of time so they end up in your local Kentucky Fried Chicken store.

Toxins in the Ocean

The worst oil spill in North America occurred in 2010. An explosion on April 20, 2010, aboard the Deepwater Horizon, a drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico connected to a well owned by the oil company BP, led to the largest accidental oil spill in history. Hundreds of miles of beaches were coated with a thick oil residue. Wildlife was impacted. Marine animals were impacted.

According to British Petroleum, it is now safe to eat the seafood from the Gulf of Mexico. I enjoyed eating seafood before I learned some health principles. Our oceans are growing more and more acidic everyday. The oxygen level in the ocean is diminished now. There are toxins in the ocean. Many species of seafood are scavengers and bottom feeders.

Lobsters, crabs, sharks and other seafood prowl saltwater and eat dead seafood. These same creatures can be found near human sewage pipes that drain into the ocean. I guess there was a reason that these types of seafood were labeled as unclean in the Bible. I know the last thing I want to put in my mouth is a lobster or crab that just finished eating human sewage. Glad I didn’t just eat supper or I might have gotten sick writing this blog post.

To be fair, the Bible states in Leviticus 11:8-9:

These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat.

And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you.

Are You Getting Your Sleep?

How good is your sleep each 24 hour cycle?

Are you a light sleeper?

Are you able to lay down and drift right off to sleep?

People lose sleep worrying over life problems. Shift workers lose sleep when having to be up late or rising very early for work. Medications and prescription drugs can cause people to lose sleep.

Why Do We Sleep?

Sleep is a very important part of our overall health. The sub conscious mind takes over once your sleep cycle begins. Our conscious mind needs rest in order to perform when you are awake. Here are the main reasons humans as well as animals have built in clocks that require rest.

Build up energy for the next day.

Keep a regular balance between organs in the body.

Keep a regular body temperature.

Our bodies immune system repairs itself during sleep.

Repair cells and tissues in the body.

Insomnia

According to the Veterans Administration in Phoenix Arizona, one out of three people have an issue with insomnia at some point in their life. Around 10 percent of people have persistent insomnia. There are some actions you can take to help improve your sleep.

1. Develop regular daytime activity.

2. Go for 30 minute walks on a daily basis. If you live in an area where the weather is not conducive to being outdoors during winter, try and find an indoor place that you can still get your walking done.

3. Make your sleeping environment as dark as possible. Also make the temperature comfortable but not extreme. Reduce noise as best as possible. The ideal sleeping environment would be a quiet, dark bedroom around 68 degrees.

4. Eat your last meal at least 3 hours before bedtime. You want your digestive system to be finished digesting your meal so the whole body can rest better.

5. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine. Drugs are not conducive to good sleep hygiene.

6. Get regular light exposure during the day.

7. Relax for 60 to 90 minutes before bed. Don’t watch movies or programs like newscasts showing murders, robberies, or other violence. Some people enjoy listening to relaxing music, taking a warm bath or doing a meditation practice. I enjoy reading for an hour before bed. This helps make me sleepy.

8. Go to bed at the same time every evening. Wake up at the same time each morning.

9. Don’t have your bedroom clock in view or where you may hear noise from the clock ticking.

Did you just accept the statement as fact or did you do some research?

When I hear such information on the radio or reading an online journal, I ask myself this question.

Who released the report?

Do they have a vested interest in promoting wine sales? Is there a financial gain involved with someone who was creating the report?

Here are some facts that I have researched via Wikipedia and other medical journals. I also consult a Naturopathic Doctor that has practiced Natural Healing ( founded by Hippocrates in 464-370 BC ) for over 40 years.

Alcohol is a toxin to the body.

Alcohol dehydrates the body. Many people are dehydrated already from not drinking enough pure water each day.

Wine is made from crushing grapes and capturing the juice in a container so the juice will ferment over time.

Our body was not designed to take in alcohol. One out of ten people that start drinking end up having a problem with alcohol as the pharmacological effect impacts people differently. Is it worth seriously damaging your health? Is Wine Safe to Drink?

Welcome to the Who Made Us Fat post. I am a child of the 1960’s. I never remember seeing anyone that was obese. I do remember when Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken, McDonald’s, and Pizza Hut restaurants started appearing in every city. We rarely visited any of these places to eat as our mother made a meal at home for all of us children.

In 1971, a man who was raised on a 160 acre farm in Indiana began a chain of events that has impacted the waistlines of billions of people in the world today. When he began serving in the cabinet position, America had been involved in combat operations in Vietnam for over 6 years. Food inflation was a serious problem in America. People were having a hard time making ends meet.

Only buy healthy foods from the grocery and you won’t have any junk food in your house should you be tempted for something that is loaded with fat, salt or sugar.
  2. Drink Pure Water-Leave Coffee and Sodas Behind. Your cells need hydration from pure water. Your body does not need the acid that is in coffee or soda.
  3. Exercise on a Daily Basis-Walking at least 30 minutes a Day is the best prescription your medical provider can ever give you. The benefits will save  your life and stimulate weight loss. You will feel better and sleep better.
  4. Eat Supper at 5:00 pm if possible. Going to bed on a full stomach does not give you the rest your body needs. By eating earlier,  your food will be digested and your body can rest better at night. Avoid snacks at night. I take about 12 minutes each evening to do a thorough brush and floss on my teeth along with an alcohol free mouth rinse to remove plaque from my teeth. I am never tempted to eat snacks after taking all the time to clean my teeth.
  5. Participate in support groups with people that are on a similar path. You can meet fellow health enthusiasts in your local community or in online forums. Studies show that support groups help people reach their goals more than people that attempt to make permanent behavior changes on their own. Ask for help from your local faith community also.
  6. If you have a lapse and eat something that is not on your new menu plan, don’t beat yourself up to the point that you lose your focus. Just pick yourself up and move forward because you can do anything you set your mind to achieve.
  7. There are 21 meals per week if you eat 3 meals per day. If 1 out of 21 meals is not as healthy as it should be, don’t destroy your goal over that one meal. Be careful to not let other people sabotage your goals of getting to your ideal weight.

They can also cause severe allergic reactions. Toxicants make their way into our food and our environment in a number of ways, but can do so wherever chemicals are used. Pesticides used in farming can affect our food, and can also make their way into the water supply. Toxic run-off from industrial farms can sometimes end up affecting fish, making them toxic when eaten. Toxic chemicals are added to all sorts of household products, particularly cleaning products. There are various airborne pollutants from factories and vehicles in the air, especially in urban areas. It is impossible to escape toxicants.

Toxicants and Disease

There is strong evidence linking exposure to toxicants to disease. Most damaging may be long-term, low-level exposure to toxicants in the environment. Some chemicals are dealt with by the body quickly, while others are more difficult for the body to deal with. Over time, they slowly build up in our bodies, sitting in our tissue. Women can pass on chemicals in their own bodies to their children when pregnant, and so many of us are born with toxicants already in our bodies.

Much research has been done into toxicants, and many direct links between them and certain diseases found. For example, the link between lead absorption and disease is well-known, especially its link to developmental disorders in children. Mercury is another common toxicant, causing damage to the brain, heart, lungs, kidney and immune system. You can find some more information about research into particular toxicants and disease here. These direct links are almost certainly only a small part of the story. With all kinds of chemicals and organic toxins building up in our bodies all the time, it is impossible to carry out research into the effects of every different combination. However, we do know that incidence of unexplained diseases such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and physical problems such as infertility is rising. It does not take much to work out that constant exposure to toxic substances cannot be good for our health.

Can we Avoid Toxicants?

It is impossible to avoid them altogether, but there are some sensible steps you can take to cut down on your exposure to toxicants.

–          Switch to natural cleaning products, rather than using chemical ones. You will be surprised at how effective they are. Just remember that previous generations managed just fine without harsh chemical cleaners.

–          Be careful about using make-up, creams, powders and other products on your skin. Try to use as few products as you can, and look for natural alternatives where possible.

Toxic Substances How to Avoid Them–          Buy organic, unprocessed foods. Better still, grow your own. Pesticides used in agriculture are a major source of toxic chemicals, but they are not needed. Any foods that have gone through some kind of factory processing may also have been exposed to chemicals: stick to fresh wholefoods as much as possible, for both long and short term health benefits.

Toxic Substances How to Avoid Them–          Try and avoid atmospheric pollution. It’s difficult to do, and sometimes you just can’t avoid travel through polluted rush-hour cities, but avoid it when you can. Do your bit too: ride a bike or walk if possible, rather than driving your car.

As well as avoiding toxicants, we can also take steps to try and flush those we do ingest out of our bodies. Some foods help our bodies cleanse themselves. Body and Mind: The Holistic Approach to Wellness

We humans have powerful minds, and powerful bodies, and the relationship between the two is stronger than many people think. Having a healthy mind will help keep your body healthy, and vice-versa. Many of us lead stressful, busy lives, and find it difficult to keep our minds and bodies healthy. We often lead sedentary lives, going from desk, to car, to couch every day. Lack of time, cooking skills and knowledge can mean that we eat a damaging diet. Urban life exposes us to toxic chemicals everywhere we go. All these things can help contribute to both physical and mental health problems, and they in turn contribute to each other.

If you tend to find that you are tired, grumpy and lacking in energy, and prone to minor illnesses and aches and pains, then you probably already know that you need to change your lifestyle. How do you do this? You make body and mind wellness your goal.

Wellness

Wellness is about more than just not being ill: it is about managing your body and mind so that they work for you, not against you. A key part of the wellness concept is recognition that the body and mind are not separate, and that healthiness in one can help promote healthiness in the other. This is partly a general connection: if you feel physically ill, your emotional health will be affected, and that in turn may make you feel more ill.

However, there are also some very specific connections between physical and mental functioning. For example, scientists know that half of the neurotransmitter function in the brain is actually made in the gut: so eating the right food has a direct link with cognitive function. Poor emotional health could even be a risk factor for developing cancer: a study carried out by Israeli researchers showed that women who had suffered two ‘severe life events’ were 62% more likely than other women to develop breast cancer.

It seems clear that if you do not keep your body and your mind healthy, you will not struggle to keep either of them healthy.

Taking Action

Often, it is difficult or impossible to do anything about some of the things in our lives that are causing us stress and damaging our health. Things like having to commute in busy traffic every day, working with difficult people, or having financial worries are hard to do anything about. While we cannot always change our lives easily, we can make sure that we have resilience, and resilience leads to wellness. Resilience is being physically and mentally strong and able to deal with everything life throws at us. If you are finding that even running simple errands (having to collect parcels or do some last-minute shopping) feels stressful, then you need more resilience.

Follow these practical tips to help you build your Resilience:

–          Keep active.

Our bodies are not designed to be inactive, and when we do not use our bodies enough, they begin to deteriorate. When we are sedentary, our minds are more prone to stress and depression, as we are not using our bodies as we should. Exercise sends an instant hit of glucose and oxygen into the brain, both of which it needs to function properly.

–          Understand nutrition.

Eating the right foods gives your body and brain the fuel they need to function. Having the right diet can sometimes mean being able to stop taking drugs for chronic illnesses and allergies. The best food to eat is the food that is closest to our ‘natural’ diet: plenty of fresh unprocessed whole foods, mainly fruits, vegetables and whole grains. If you have particular allergies or concerns about your diet, see if you can find a good nutritionist who can advise you on natural supplements.

–          Focus your mind.

Have life-goals and a sense of purpose. What is it that you feel you were put on the planet to do? If you do not know, develop your interests and find out. Taking part in yoga, meditation or tai chi can help you focus both body and mind on your goals.

–          Make social connections.

We are designed to live with and among each other: the modern pattern of living alone or in small nuclear families is not our natural state. Make time for friends and family and for your community, and you will find you feel happier and more grounded.

–          Accept change.

Life is unpredictable, so stop fighting it. Build your inner core of strength so that you can deal with change, both good and bad. Do this by regularly re-evaluating your life and understanding your own emotional responses. Change always brings loss of some kind, even when it is positive (such as having a child leading to loss of independence). It often also brings opportunity, so learn to focus on that.

No-one can guarantee that they will always be happy and healthy, but you can give yourself the best possible chance.
