Shop Small Business Saturday
On 27 November 2010, American Express in partner ship with the National Trust for Historic Preservation originated the idea along with Boston Mayor Tom Menino and the Roslindale Village Main Street. Social media sites like Twitter and Facebook also helped kick start the initiative that is designed to have consumers support their local small businesses with their holiday purchases.
Small businesses are the back bone of the US and Canadian economies. In the US, there are close to 32 million small businesses registered. There were around 1.5 million registered small businesses in Canada in 2019.
Small businesses have a large impact on local communities. The business owner pays rent or owns a piece of property for the business. Local taxes are added to the local municipalities with brick and mortar stores. Local people are hired to work at these small businesses.
Recently my wife Patricia needed some potatoes for her meal preparation. Instead of driving 9 miles one way to the closest large grocery store, I decided to investigate the local grocery store where we live in a small town. I found what we needed and did a walk through so I would be aware of what our local small store has.
In the USA and Canada, many of the local merchants depend on local citizens to be consumers. Do your best to help these neighbors and take your business to their shops instead of buying from huge billion dollar businesses.
I take Saturday off from work and business to spend time at Church with my wife Patricia and friends from church. We like to study the Bible, worship God, enjoy a fellowship dinner together and go hiking or visiting people that are unable to attend worship.
