Welcome to my Do You Eat Red Meat post. For many years, I was a meat eater.

I grew up in the 60’s when McDonald restaurants expanded rapidly. It was a special treat to go there or Burger King to get a hamburger. I continued eating red meat until 1999 when I realized I was overweight and headed for health problems.

We all remember the E Coli deaths and now Jim Avila reports about Pink Slime. Ammonia Gas was used to treat animal fat that was processed into hamburger and sold in the stores to you and me. Watch this video to learn why the meat industry is not your advocate for health.

ABC News was sued over the reports by the Beef Industry. It is sad that big corporate interests are more worried about their profits than the health of the people that consume the foods that they process from animals.

Do you eat red meatOver time, I was able to give up eating all animal products. I recommend eliminating one food at a time to sustain permanent change. I did not totally give up chicken at once.

I decided to just eat white chicken meat until I was ready to give up chicken breasts. I used the same approach with turkey. Here is a link to some delicious recipes that are vegan. There is a search box where you can enter just about any kind of healthy vegan or vegetarian meal.

You will not miss eating animal products. You will also feel better. As a matter of fact, you can get plenty of nutrition from a direct source. Ever notice how cows are grazing in the pasture all day long? If you eat meat from cows, you are getting protein and nutrition from a secondary source. I am grateful that I know eating animal food is not healthy so I ask people do you eat red meat to see if they are interested in getting healthier.

Welcome to my Should Pregnant Women Drink Alcohol post where we will investigate the health consequences. In June 2012, a controversial health issue was raised: Is alcohol consumption safe for pregnant women?

A recent Danish study concluded that pregnant women can safely drink 1-8 alcoholic beverages each week.

I will include links to all of the articles that share pertinent information about this issue at the end of my post.

It is important to remember to use common sense and logic and consider the source of information and studies. Is there an economic interest behind the Danish study? Is the alcohol industry in anyway involved with the study?

While writing this post the Dragnet television show comes to mind when the actor stated: “Just the Facts”. Let’s look at the facts and research and consider sources.

In my travels and research through this life I have learned the following:

1. Sixty percent of women have at least one drink each year

2. One in ten drinkers become addicted to alcohol

3. Alcohol is a toxin that the body does not need

4. Alcoholic drinks tend to be high in calories

5. Some women that drink during pregnancy have children with birth defects including fetal alcohol syndrome

6. Tragedy strikes when a woman that has become addicted to alcohol gets in a motor vehicle and drives

7. Female drinkers have at least a 50 percent higher death rate than male drinkers

Just this weekend in Southern California a young woman crashed her automobile into a young family and killed a young child and the adults are in critical condition at a local hospital. Our hearts can only imagine the pain that family has experienced and there is no way to bring that little child back. On this morning’s Santa Barbara news program another three people were critically injured in a roll over crash on the 101 highway. Alcohol was involved in this accident also.

Proverbs 20:1-3

Wine is a mocker, Strong drink is a brawler, And whoever is led astray by it is not wise.

Another verse to consider: Proverbs 23:31-33

Do not look on the wine when it is red, When it sparkles in the cup, When it swirls around smoothly;

At the last it bites like a serpent, And stings like a viper.

Your eyes will see strange things, And your heart will utter perverse things.

I have never heard of someone desiring rotting fruit ( fermentation ). Alcohol is made by taking rotten fruit and mixing in sugar. Jesus only drank wine that was not fermented.

Let me know what you think about a pregnant woman drinking alcohol. I am not a licensed medical expert but do know that the fetus carries fluid and nutrition to the unborn child. If the woman is drinking more than the suggested one drink a day, how does that impact the fetus?

Weight Loss Basics

Welcome to my Weight Loss Basics post where I list things that helped me lose over 75 pounds in the year 2000. These actions are simple and affordable steps that are easy and available to everyone to lose weight NOW!

Weight Loss Basics1. Wake up 45 minutes earlier than you normally do. You can always cut out a television program at night or tape it for the next day if you are addicted. You can get to bed 45 minutes to an hour earlier the same day with this simple adjustment.

2. If you pray, spend 15 minutes with prayer and meditation and positive messages first thing in the morning. Pour a 16-20 ounce glass of water. Put the juice of 1/4 of an organic lemon into your water. You can also use a Tablespoon of Lemon Juice. Drink the water while doing your meditations.

3. Put on your hiking boots or athletic shoes and head out the door for a brisk walk. If you live where there is inclement weather, you can adjust your schedule to be at the local mall when it opens and walk there.

4. Do weight bearing exercises 3 days a week. My schedule is to lift weights on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and then do a Pilates workout on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. I rest on Saturdays and go to church. A group of us likes to go out hiking in nature after we have a really healthy fellowship dinner around 1 pm every Saturday at church.

Weight Loss Basics5. Engage in at least a 30 minute brisk walk on a daily basis. Try to get your heart rate up so you are getting some cardiovascular benefits. A little sweat is good for you.

6. If you can afford an inversion table, hang upside down for 10 to 12 minutes and read some positive motivational material while inverted.

7. Do sit-ups, push-ups, and an exercise ball routine for another 30 minutes. Finish with some great yoga stretches for your hamstrings. I enjoy the pretzel, child’s pose, cat’s stretch, and down dog as my yoga exercises.

8. Eat a healthy breakfast. I like a warm bowl of oatmeal with blueberries and a half of a grapefruit along with a banana for breakfast on weekdays. On weekends, I make the healthy waffles (recipe under my healthy living section on my blog).

9. Drink one half your body weight in ounces of pure water each day. Avoid soda and caffeine.

10. Eat a healthy dinner with a variety of organic fruits and vegetables, nuts, whole grains and legumes. Steam your vegetables to get as many of the nutrients as possible. Avoid animal products because they have fat in them. Avoid snacks and junk food. Eat a light supper as early as possible to help your digestive system process your dinner 3 hours before bed.

Simple Steps Help You Lose Weight

Welcome to my Simple Steps Help You Lose Weight blog post. Have you noticed that glasses, plates and silverware are larger now than they used to be?

Simple Steps Help You Lose WeightDrink one half your ideal body weight in fluid ounces of pure water everyday. Do not include fluids that are not pure water. The color of your urine in the toilet will tell you if you are hydrated. Your urine should look either very light yellow or almost clear. If your urine is dark yellow, you are not hydrated and your health will be affected. Many times a person will reach for something to eat when their body is actually thirsty for water.

Serving utensils are also much larger than a Tablespoon. I have noticed myself piling on a nice looking dish on my plate with these large serving utensils. By using smaller serving spoons, we can reduce the amount of food we put on our plates.

When you go to a church fellowship meal you will notice that the serving spoons are quite large. There is a way to help yourself eat less and not feel deprived. Downsize the glasses, plates and silverware you use to put less food on your plate.  Only use 8 fluid ounce glasses instead of the 16-32 ounce glasses that are common today. You will have a plate full of food on the smaller plate so you won’t feel like you are hungry because you did not get enough to eat.

Simple Steps Help You Lose WeightOne key to longevity that a group of people aged 100 and over shared is to quit eating when you are 80 percent full. This reduces the amount of food you eat and reduces the amount of work your body needs to do to digest and utilize the nutrients in the food.

If you drink alcohol, downsize the glass that you drink wine in to keep you from filling up a large glass. Alcohol is very high in calories and is not conducive to weight loss. The calories are ’empty’ and there is no nutritional benefit derived from alcohol use. You can eat muscadine grapes to get the health benefits and anti aging properties of resveratrol.

Have you ever broken your dominant arm or wrist? I did many years ago and had to learn how to use a fork and spoon with my left hand. Try slowing down when you eat your meals by eating with your left hand if you are right-handed and of course right hand if you are left-handed. You won’t be able to eat as fast and you can chew your food slower.

If you have a family, sit down at a table and share during meal time. This will allow you to enjoy meals together. If you are single, don’t sit in front of a television and eat. Focus in on your food and enjoy seeing, smelling and tasting your food. Make meal time a pleasurable experience.

I remember being able to sit out on a screened porch as a child and young adult when visiting my grandparents. It was fun to be outside eating and not worry about the mosquitoes or bugs that are prevalent in the southeastern part of the country. Being outside at picnics or porches is a way to be present with the world while enjoying a meal.

Simple Steps Help You Lose WeightUse a 15 minute meditation practice before your breakfast and supper each day. By taking time out of our hectic world and being silent to focus in and be mindful of our bodies, we can greatly diminish the need for over indulging in food, cigarettes, alcohol or drugs. Do some deep breathing and use a ‘mantra’ to help you focus in on your body during your silent meditation.

Welcome to my post about GMO Foods and Your Health. In 2012, California Proposition 37 Was About the Genetically Engineered Foods Labeling Initiative Statute. Germany seeks ban on GMO foods to keep these foods out of their nation.

  • Requires labeling on raw or processed food offered for sale to consumers if made from plants or animals with genetic material changed in specified ways.
  • Prohibits labeling or advertising such food, or other processed food, as “natural”.
  • Exempts foods that are: certified organic; unintentionally produced with genetically engineered material; made from animals fed or injected with genetically engineered material but not genetically engineered themselves; processed with or containing only small amounts of genetically engineered ingredients; administered for treatment of medical conditions; sold for immediate consumption such as in a restaurant; or alcoholic beverages.

tired of dietingEver notice how weight loss advertising is every where you access media? Right now during the Christmas and New Year’s holiday season, there is very little advertising.

That all changes on 2 January when we enter the New Year. North America will be bombarded with ads from Nutrisystem, Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers and many other weight loss programs or meal plans. The ads will be on television, social media and even on streaming services like Roku.

If someone who struggles with weight doesn’t change their eating behavior, they will continue to go through cycles of losing weight and then gaining the weight back. There is no quick fix. If you sit on the couch and eat the same kinds of foods that made you overweight, you will not get anywhere buying prepackaged meals like pasta, pizza and chocolate cake.

When I struggled with weight, I noticed that I got tired in the middle of the afternoon. I also would get hungry a few hours before the next meal. The hunger was a sign my body was sending that the body did not have the nutrients that it needs to function well. I often had to resort to eating fast food due to my being on the road for business.

A favorite saying of mine that has helped me with motivation is: IF NOTHING CHANGES, NOTHING CHANGES.

When you give your body a balanced whole food diet from the above categories, your body gets the essential nutrients it needs for good health. 1. Add Many More Fruits and Vegetables to Your Diet

Consider blending some fruits and vegetables together for a smoothie. If you add an avocado with a handful of blueberries or strawberries, a tablespoon of coconut oil and a cup of non-fat yogurt, you can enjoy a thick smoothie that will easily replace any fattening and excessively sugary breakfast you would normally consume.

If you are missing out on eating those crunchy potato chips, consider baking your own kale chips for an afternoon snack. Add your favorite seasoning to pieces of kale, spread them out on a greased baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil and then cook them in the oven until they are perfectly crisp. There are many fun recipes available for making fruits and vegetables taste good, so consider looking into them and making small changes to your daily diet, one meal at a time.

2. Choose Alternatives When Preparing Meals

You can even make gluten-free cloud bread as a replacement for traditional white bread. Many people enjoy baking this bread at home, and they often use it to prepare healthy sandwiches.

3. Spend 30 Minutes or More Exercising Daily

Staying active is an important part of keeping your diabetes under control. You do not have to run around until you feel exhausted to make progress. In fact, these are a few great exercises you can do daily:

-Walk in the park for 30 minutes.

-Jog lightly on the treadmill.

-Do a 30 minute session of lunges, squats, jumping jacks and crunches.

-Go for a swim.

-Ride your bicycle with a helmet of course !

Do you drink at least 8 glasses of water each day? Don’t count coffee, sodas or tea. By drinking water, you will aid  your body in eliminating excess fat.

1. Avoid eating fast foods, junk foods and processed foods.

2. Eat foods as grown. The more raw foods you eat the better.

3. Start off your day with 2 large glasses of water then go for a brisk 30 minute walk before breakfast.

4. Eat a large breakfast of fresh fruits and healthy whole grains.

5. Get some fresh air and sunshine each day.

6. Avoid eating between meals. It is also a good habit to drink a glass of water 30 minutes before eating and do not drink any fluids while eating your 3 meals a day.

7. Eat your largest meal at breakfast, then a healthy plate of fresh vegetables with some whole grain rice, quinoa or other grain around the middle of the day. Eat a small supper of soup or salad.

8. Get an accountability partner to help you help yourself and others achieve that perfect body for the beach or swimming pool.

Beans, Fruits, Legumes, Nuts, Seeds, Vegetables and Whole Grains are loaded with Fiber.

Fiber is a type of carbohydrate (just like sugars and starches) but since it is not broken down by the human body, it does not contribute any calories. Yet, on a food label, fiber is listed under total carbohydrate. So this gets kind of confusing for people who have diabetes. Carbohydrate is the one nutrient that has the biggest impact on blood glucose. So, does fiber have any effect on your blood glucose?

lose weightThe answer is that fiber does not raise blood glucose levels. Because it is not broken down by the body, the fiber in an apple or a slice of whole grain bread has no effect on blood glucose levels because it isn’t digested. The grams of fiber can actually be subtracted from the total grams of carb you are eating if you are using carbohydrate counting for meal planning.

Fiber is a good thing for people with diabetes.

The average person should eat between 20-35 grams of fiber each day.  Most Americans eat a diet that primarily consists of animal foods. In those cases, the person is only getting 10 grams of fiber in their diet.

A study in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that people with diabetes who ate 50 grams of fiber a day — particularly soluble fiber — were able to control their blood glucose better than those who ate far less.

couple joggingOur Health covers four areas of our lives. Human Beings have a Spiritual Life, a Physical Life, an Emotional Life, and a Mental Life. By taking action, a person can improve their health in all four of these areas of their being.

Taking care of our Physical Health has an impact on how we fee emotionally and mentally. My preference is to work on my Spiritual Health through Prayer and Meditation early in the morning.

My morning routine is to have a healthy breakfast so I can fuel the body for the day. Then I enjoy doing exercise from Sunday through Friday mornings. I rest on Saturday as I am in church all day working on my Spiritual Health. I have found the Health Message In the Bible to be an excellent resource for living life to the fullest.

Tofu Scrambled Eggs

Tofu Scrambled Eggs Ingredients include some healthy veggies and spices. You can modify the ingredients for your version of tofu scrambled eggs to fit your particular needs or tastes.

tofu scrambled eggs1 tsp olive oil
1 medium onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 container firm or extra firm tofu, pressed and crumbled
1 tsp curry powder
1/2 tsp turmeric
1/2 tsp cumin
1/2 of a yellow pepper, diced
6 white button mushrooms
2 tomatoes, diced
1 bunch fresh spinach

Instructions

Sautee the garlic and onion in olive oil in a large skillet. Allow to cook for 3 to 5 minutes, or until onion turns soft. Add remaining ingredients except spinach and cook, stirring frequently for another 5 minutes or so, until tofu is hot and cooked, adding more oil if needed.

Add spinach and cook a minute or two, just until wilted, stirring well.

I divide the tofu scrambled eggs into 3 servings. I eat one and put the other two covered in the refrigerator for the next two mornings. Serve with a small baked potato sliced into wedges or hash browns if you prefer.

You can fix this recipe for any meal. One suggestion is to make a Vegan Sausage Roll and you have a warm breakfast meal that has been very popular for hundreds of years.

Many people are moving away from eating animal products. There are healthy alternatives for people to chose from to help lower the risk of being diagnosed with what is known as a lifestyle disease.

Animal products have no fiber. Plant based foods are loaded with fiber. Our body needs fiber for good health. I recommend gradually moving away from eating animal foods. I started my journey in 1999 and feel great. The 75 pounds that I lost sure helps me have a more active and vibrant life today.

Spiritual Growth is the most important aspect of my life today.

Years ago I heard a man in a spiritual group meeting in a church basement in New Hampshire say: “Grow or Go”.

spiritual growthI knew right away that he meant we should strive to walk closer to God on a daily basis. In my own personal journey, I have not achieved perfection & realize I never will. I have made progress though.

My journey of walking a spiritual life began as a young child. I learned the fundamental principle that there is some power that many refer to as God that made the world we live in.

In my youth, I lived a life similar to the Prodigal Son described in the Bible. My family tried to rescue me a couple of times. At the age of 34, I was faced with the reality of liver failure from my riotous living. I had to Grow or Go.

God as I did not understand Him at that time put everyone & everything into place that I needed to begin the growth phase of my life. I have asked God for help since that morning in February 1994. I have made some bad decisions along the way and realize that every human being on the planet makes mistakes just like me. I had to surrender my whole being to God through deep and sincere prayer in 2016 and now and am back on a powerful period of spiritual growth.

study-bibleIn 2004, I began reading the Holy Bible. I ask God each time I open the Book to guide my understanding. I also attend weekly Bible classes to be instructed by a mentor and hear other people’s interpretations of the Scriptures.

The biggest single principle that I have learned is that God is Pure Love. His Love and Character are revealed in His Moral Law which is known as the Ten Commandments.

Many sincere Christians say that it is not necessary to keep God’s Moral Law but they are mistaken. Here is why:

  1. Written In Stone by the Finger of God
  2. Eternal In Nature
  3. Our Government Has Laws

Even before there was a nation of Israel, man knew the principles of God’s Law which is Pure Love. By keeping God’s Law, we are saying I surrender to you God. I want you to teach me how to Grow. I want spiritual growth in my life.

I am not saved by keeping God’s Law. I am not a legalist either. I am a Loyalist and look at His Moral Law as Ten Promises. I do not look at God’s Law as bondage or rules that are impossible to follow.

Jesus tells us in John 14:15: If you love Me, keep My commandments.

So here are the Promises that God is making to me by Daily Prayer and Bible Study. Because You Love Me Daniel:

  1. You won’t find it necessary to have another God. I brought you out of bondage.
  2. You won’t need any idols like gambling, movie stars or sports stars or sports teams.
  3. You won’t need any images or pornography or any evil thing in your life. You won’t take my name in vain or use foul language.
  4. You won’t need to be a workaholic and you won’t have to try to work your way to heaven. I provided your ticket to heaven through Jesus Christ.
  5. You won’t disrespect elders and you will live a long and fruitful life.
  6. You won’t murder someone in your mind or physically harm another human being that I created.
  7. You won’t need to have adulterous relationships.
  8. You won’t need to steal what does not belong to you.
  9. You won’t need to bear false witness or lie to anyone.
  10. You won’t need to covet what does not belong to you.
